Located on the old canals of Colombo, Layards Wharf honours its rich cultural and industrial past

The land on which Havelock Mall stands is rich in culture and history, with the surrounding canal route having been established in 1872 as a route for produce and trade. The banks of the canal have been home to a diverse mix of people and cultures since its establishment, with the previous site being home to Welawatte Spinning & Weaving Mills; a giant in the textile trade. The company brought down labourers from India during its peak years, and many of their descendants remain in the local area. Layards Wharf pays homage to the trade, people and places of Havelock, without forgetting its vibrant past and what stood before.

OUR ROLE:

Creative Concept, Visual Identity, Brand Language, Illustration, Signage & Wayfinding, Packaging

The main ‘A’ mark was developed from the same shape as the paddy boats that used to sail along the canals, and has been used extensively throughout the identity system.
Archival references and imagery were used to create illustrations of the old spinning & weaving mills that stood before, and a brand story wall was created at the entrance for customers to learn more about the rich history of the area.
Taking inspiration from the bustling street food markets of Bangkok, Delhi, and Kuala Lumpur, we created a series of authentic signage and posters that paid homage to the hunger inducing corners of these South Asian and East Asian cities.
Description of the image

“The best part about working with SNO is how the team truly tries to dive into the subject matter, which is clearly visible in the end result. They understood our vision and translated it into an identity that encapsulated our project's concept and mission. They didn't just deliver a design; they crafted an immersive experience that reflected our concept's essence.”
